ASSI PMT conducted the 1st Webinar – Education in Emergencies on 24 may 2019 at National Secretariat for Disaster Safe Education Unit (SEKNAS SPAB) in Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture Office. 30 participants attended this webinar online coming from Ministries of Education , National Disaster Management Officials, Consortium Partners, NGO’s, and Safe Schools Practitioners, all coming from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Zimbabwe, France, and Sweden. The Presenters presented about overall concept of Education in Emergencies (Ms. Rachael Fermin, Education in Emergency Advisor at Save the Children, Asia Regional Office), Best practices of Education in Emergencies in Indonesia (Ms. Ida Ngurah, National DRM Manager from Plan International Indonesia), Multistakeholder Engagement in implementing Education in Emergencies (Mr. Janaka as Head of Evaluation Section of Directorate for Development of Special Education and Special Service from Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture), and Supporting Children Psychosocial Well-Being and Resilience in Education in Emergencies (Ms Bevita as Acting Director of Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs from Wahana Visi Indonesia).
Ms Rachael Fermin highlited that education in emergencies serve as a bridge to maintain steady development of the education system. Ms Ngurah emphasized foundational standards that applied in Lombok and Palu are increase of access and learning environment (equal of access, protection and well being, increase of facilities and services), teaching and learning (assessment of learning outcomes; training, professional development and support; curricula; instruction and learning processes), support and supervision for teacher and other personels, and education policy. Mr Janaka addressed that the important role of MOEC (National Safe School) are coordination with local government to ensure the continuity of education in emergencies and establish of policy in education in emergencies. And Ms Bevita highlighted the importance of education in emergencies as going to school can restore the sense of normalcy to the disaster affected students. Ms Bevita drew out the experience in post Central Sulawesi Earthquake & Tsunami disaster.
