On 19-26 October 2018, the Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency and its Office in the province of North Sumatra held DRR Month Celebration in Medan, North Sumatra as part of International Day for DRR 2018 with the theme “. Yayasan Plan International Indonesia (YPII) and its DRM programmes such as: Urban Resilience project, Child-centred Climate Change Adaptation (4CA), Strengthening Community and School Preparedness in Disasters and Climate Change (BERANI), ASEAN Safe Schools Initiative (ASSI), participated in a side event and knowledge sharing sessions that promoted youth voices and participation in climate change adaptation and school safety at national and ASEAN levels, communication in time of disasters, and discussed about national school safety strategy, Education in Emergency and digital platform to disseminate knowledge and information about school safety.
On 27 October 2018, ASSI consortium partners (Plan International, Save the Children and World Vision) in collaboration with Disaster Education Consortium and Government of Jakarta held a Youth Festival wherein students from more than 30 schools in Jakarta participated through drawing competition and school board campaigns with DRR theme. ASSI Project Phase 5 in Indonesia was also launched with a talkshow on the roles of young people in promoting school safety and DRR to their peers, school community, and family. All youth panel speaking was Mikha Tambayong, an young influencing conveying DRR messages, Fajar Siddiq, Indonesian Youth DRR Group on ASEAN youth initiative in DRR and Nabila, a representation of Plan’s Youth Ambassador.
